This year my visit to the consumer electronics show in Las Vegas was my first as Babel’s official correspondent and as such I had to start with a visit to the Nikon booth, a brand dear to my boss’ heart Bahbel’s editor Georgette Torres.
Nikon did not disappoint this year bringing a couple of new cameras that caught my attention. The most anticipated D4 for serious professionals and of course a more affordable consumer focus full frame Nikon 1.
I took the D4 for a test drive and needless to say I was very impressed with all the new features. The D4 comes with several additional controls in the back which makes it easier to operate with a vertical grip. There is a new joystick with a dedicated Live View switch. It is also the first DSRL to incorporate a slot for an XQD card. In addition to the usual USB and HDMI connectors, the D4 also incorporates an Ethernet port, mic and headphone connection jack.
For photography enthusiast experts in point and shoot, Nikon created the Nikon 1.
The Nikon 1 J1 delivers excellent video and low-ISO photo quality, plus some aspects of the camera’s performance lead its class.
The Nikon 1 J1 is a fine camera but it is also on the expensive side ($595) for a point-and-shoot upgrader and has a few drawbacks for the more advanced user.
